Sports press releases work the same way as any news release, but scores, rosters and schedules carry the news. Below are three complete samples — youth league, player signing and tournament result — plus a template.
What to include in a sports press release
Sports editors want results first and context second. Put the score, the name and the date in the headline, then answer in the lead paragraph who played, where, when and what it means for the season.
- Team or league name and division — "under-12 boys", "Class 4A", "semi-pro".
- The result or the move, with numbers: score, time, placement, record, signing term.
- Date, venue and level of competition, including the tournament or league name.
- Named athletes with positions and one specific stat each. Editors need names to write a caption.
- What comes next: the next fixture, the playoff seed, the season opener, the first match after a signing.
- Quote from a coach or club official — one line about the performance, not a general thank-you.
- How to get involved: registration links, tryout dates, ticket information, volunteering.

Sample 1: youth league season announcement
Riverside Youth Soccer League Opens Fall Season Sept. 12 With 34 Teams
RIVERSIDE, Calif., Sept. 3, 2026 — The Riverside Youth Soccer League opens its fall season on Saturday, Sept. 12, with 34 teams and more than 480 players from ages 6 to 17. Opening-day matches run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bordwell Park, and admission is free.
The league added four under-10 teams this year after registration grew 22%, and it is fielding its first girls' under-16 division. Every team plays a minimum of ten matches through Nov. 14, and all coaches hold current safety and concussion certifications.
"We had 60 kids on a waitlist last fall. Adding four teams means those families are playing instead of waiting," said league president Ana Delgado.
Registration for the winter indoor season opens Oct. 1 at riversideyouthsoccer.example; volunteer referees and coaches are needed.

Bend Bighorns Sign Goalkeeper Trevor Nakamura for the 2027 Season
BEND, Ore., Oct. 14, 2026 — The Bend Bighorns have signed goalkeeper Trevor Nakamura to a two-year contract covering the 2027 and 2028 seasons, the club announced today. Nakamura, 24, spent three seasons with the Willamette Valley Rangers, making 41 appearances and keeping 14 clean sheets.
He recorded a 0.98 goals-against average last season, second best in the Cascadia Premier League. Nakamura joins a Bighorns side that conceded 38 goals in 2026.
"Trevor is the first keeper we have signed who can organize a back line by talking," said head coach Marcus Boyd. "Fourteen clean sheets in that league is not luck."
Nakamura joins pre-season training on Feb. 2, and the Bighorns open the 2027 season at home on March 20. Season tickets go on sale Nov. 5 at bendbighorns.example/tickets.

Fairview Middle School Wins District Basketball Title in Overtime
FAIRVIEW, Okla., March 8, 2027 — Fairview Middle School won the Northwest District basketball championship on Saturday, beating Enid Central 54–52 in overtime at the Enid High School gym. It is the school's first district title since 2019.
Eighth grader Emilio Ramos scored 21 points, including the winning free throw with 2.4 seconds left. Guard Priya Shah added 14 points and six steals. Fairview finished the season 19–3.
"We were down nine at halftime and nobody panicked," said head coach Rachel Whitmore. "That is a team that has played together since sixth grade."
Fairview advances to the regional tournament April 10–11 at Oklahoma State University, with a community fundraiser on March 21 to cover travel costs.

Tips for sports press releases
- Score first. A headline without the result is a rumor, not news.
- Name names, correctly. Spell every athlete and coach the way their families spell it.
- Get parent consent before putting youth players' names and photos in a release.
- Send within 24 hours of the final whistle; sports news ages faster than any other kind.

- Never overstate the level. Call a rec league a rec league; accuracy is the only thing that gets you picked up twice.

Yes, especially with a photo and named players. Youth results are among the most-read items in community papers.
Should the release include the full roster?
No. Name three to five players with a specific stat each and mention the roster size. A long list buries the result.
How long should a sports press release be?
